Joe Sorren’s Between the Wrinkles

In the early 2000s, Joe Sorren emerged as an important figure in the eclectic and transversal artistic movement of Pop Surrealism, also known as Lowbrow art.

His latest exhibition Between the Wrinkles (Dorothy Circus Gallery, London) used narrative painting to traverse the rooms of memory, unveiling in each work a hint of a story the artist holds closely within himself.

Known for his “emotion lighting” and impressionistic brushstrokes, Sorren paints with muted but luminous oil colours that transport the viewer into a realm of warm wool and soft textures.

“Since painting is a physical record of movement in time, brushstrokes are not unlike the grooves on a vinyl record,” he said. “They capture not just the colour and shape of a stroke, but also the timbre; the energy and emotion experienced at the time..”
