Mercurius’s Future World(s): Essays that look beyond nihilistic neoliberalism

Still from Blushing Valleys, Gery Georgiva

The Future World(s) column in Mercurius Magazine published texts that imagine alternatives to the crisis capitalism of today’s world. It took as its cue (and departed from) the ideas of cultural theorist Mark Fisher who, in the wake of the 2008 financial crash, suggested that it is easier to foresee the end of the world than the end of capitalism.

The writers in this anthology recognise this contemporary malaise—a pervasive sense of fatalism that hinders our ability to envision and enact transformative futures. From a searing critique of consumer society to lyrical meditations on the animistic essence of architecture and explorations of the vital visions of contemporary oracles, their essays and interviews testify to the multiplicity of visions that animate hopes for a better world.
